To achieve this, the original house, dating from 1905, was analyzed, enhancing its monumental character without losing its whites and neutral colors. The studio specializes in the restoration of architectural heritage, so from the outset, the goal was to restore the building's monumental character to the interior of the house.
A house was designed in which the moldings were designed and added from scratch to create a backdrop that appears to have been there from the ground up. The molding acts as the centerpiece, emphasizing the original high ceilings and serving as a connecting thread for the home's overall aesthetic. This element integrates both the doors and the kitchen cabinets, as does the interiors of the bedrooms, where the cabinets are hidden within the walls. Meanwhile, the nearly 4-meter-high, modernist-inspired iron windows were designed to visually connect the main rooms, giving the house a modern feel without losing the building's monumental character.
The marble fireplace stands out as one of the most spectacular elements. Designed by the studio and built by Dolmen Piedra, it is joined by whole pieces of marble, resulting in one of the most striking features of the house.
The house, which had lost its original essence, has been completely renovated. It had no molding except for the protected windows, which fortunately were still preserved. It was dilapidated, had additions from other eras that marred its overall appearance, and was very dark and yellow. The fixtures were outdated. The bathrooms and kitchen were poorly sized relative to the overall feel, so the aim was to restore the monumental features of this apartment while respecting the high ceilings, restoring the original windows, and flush-fitting the kitchen cabinets to the walls to integrate them into the interior of the house.
The kitchen forms the heart of the home, at the client's special request. It consists of a freestanding island that provides comfortable cooking and serves as a standing space for guests. The glass doors and mirror on the back of the stove also bring light into what was initially a rather dark space in the home.
Traditional materials were used for the vertical walls and ceilings, along with plaster, molding, and plastering to restore the walls to their old-fashioned appearance. Air-gapped glass was installed in the woodwork to make the original windows more airtight, and new molded wood doors were created that follow the original design of the windows.
Although the molding may seem like it's been there forever, it was difficult to redesign it, taking into account the passage of the air conditioning ducts and other installations, ensuring the original ceiling height was maintained. It was also a complicated task to fit the cabinet doors flush with the cornices to make the walls appear hidden. The kitchen toilet is hidden in the same section as the refrigerators and main storage, so a recessed door had to be designed to fit the front of the kitchen.
It was difficult to restore the home's original character by adding what was necessary to make the facilities appropriate. It was also complicated to relocate the new rooms and adapt the existing facilities to the original layout.
